How to Clean a Go-Kart

Been on the track, your Kart is dusty, damp or just plain dirty with bits of tyre rubber and lubricants all over it! Let's get it clean.

Keepiing your go-kart clean is not rocket science, it's just good Kart housekeeping!

  • How Often to Clean: After every race, focus on bodywork, engine, brakes, air filter, tires, wheels, and chassis. The carburetor and clutch can be cleaned less frequently.
  • Time Required: Depending on the parts, it can take 30 minutes to over an hour.
  • Ideal Cleaning Locations: Garden, driveway, garage, racing track, or designated cleaning where you are allowed to clean! I did manage to do an oil change on the kitchen island the other week!.

Whether you're a seasoned racer or like us, a Privateer parent, regular cleaning ensures the longevity and optimal functioning of your child's go-kart. After all, would you let your car run on squeaky brakes, so why would you risk your kid's safety, plus it gives them more responsibility to look after the Kart.

Go get those marigolds on, and start cleaning! But be warned, if your kids are anything like Zenico when it comes to the greasy parts, it's like pulling teeth from an elephant as grease is on his NO list!

Depending on your Kart, you dont need to do all the below, but this is the gold standard ultimate guide!

For Zenicos Cadet, it's just wiping over, cleaning, and lubricating! But for others, its a mix of the below:

  • Chassis: Eliminate grass/mud and debris with a hard brush. Apply a high-quality degreaser with a cloth, checking for rust or damage.
  • Bodywork: Use natural soap or detergent with a soft cloth for body kits. Rinse panels with water and dry them using a cloth.
  • Wheels: For muddy wheels, use soap and water. For tough stains, employ a degreaser.
  • Tires: Brush off debris, wash with tire cleaner, and dry with a cloth. Check tire pressure and consider tire prep.
  • Seat: Wipe fiberglass, carbon fiber, or plastic seats with a damp cloth and mild soap. Use a leather cleaner for leather seats.
  • Engine: Clean the exterior with a degreaser and cloth. Consult a mechanic for cleaning the interior.
  • Air Filter: Rinse with soap and cold water, soak, rinse, dry, and reoil.
  • Steering Wheel: Use a mild cleaning solution and water on a soft cloth.
  • Carburetor: Regularly clean exterior components with a carb cleaner.
  • Fuel Tank: Remove, clean, and replace the fuel tank if needed.
  • Clutch: Disassemble, clean with brake cleaner, lubricate, and replace worn parts.
  • Axles: Remove, clean with degreaser, apply lubricant, and inspect for deformities.
  • Brakes: Apply brake cleaner to the disk, lubricate moving parts, and bleed the brakes.
  • Pedal: Wipe down with a damp cloth and brush for intricate areas.

Post-Cleaning Care Allow each component to dry thoroughly before reassembling to prevent corrosion. Avoid drying in direct sunlight to prevent warping and discoloration. Lubricate parts like the chain, clutch, and air filter after cleaning.
